Food Crisis and the search for Truth and Justice in the Philippines!

As we commemorate the International Working Day, we have to take note that the Food Crisis is now a world wide phenomenon and it is more pronounce in the 3rd world countries, like the Philippines. The workers, farm workers and the peasantry who produce goods and food are the direct victims of the food crisis brought about by an unjust national and global system. Under President Arroyo, the Food "Rice" Crisis is being felt by overwhelming majority, who live below the poverty line (71% of the population, IBON Survey, January 2008).

The prices of other food products also continuously soaring. One could easily pinpoint that it is the Arroyo government policy of subservience  to the IMF Stabilization Packages, WB Structural Adjustment Program (SAP) and the WTO (World Trade Organization) as the main cause! This is the neo-liberal policy of globalization vigorously pushed for by the US government and implemented by Gloria Arroyo since 2001.Moreover, the absence of nationalist industrialization, of genuine land reform, massive land conversion, neglect of the agricultural sector and the destructive effects of large mining contribute to the food crisis.  Millions of funds allocated for the agricultural sector was criminally used by the Arroyo government in the 2004 elections and for bribery to keep her in power. As a result, under the administration of  Pres. Arroyo corruption and bribery is at its height!, Philippines is on the top of the list as the most corrupt economies in Asia and unresolved anomalies continue to unfold.

Furthermore, the Permanent People's Tribunal (PPT) last March 2007 found: both President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and US President Gorge W. Bush, Jr., their respective governments are responsible for gross and systematic violation of human rights, economic plunder and transgression of the Filipino people's sovereignty.

The legitimacy of the presidency of Pres. Arroyo is seriously under question because of the "Hello Garci" scandal. Local and international critics say, she is an illegimate President.

The soaring food prices are further pushing the Filipino people's outrage against the corrupt and illegitimate Arroyo  government. They have no other recourse but to march to the streets and demand the end of the Arroyo government.

As migrant Filipinos around the world the food crisis, increasing poverty, corruption and lack of accountability affect us and our love ones and relative back home. Thus, we must join hands and put an end the ills plaguing our country. This kind and magnitude of blatant and repeated disregard for the human rights and economic interests of the Filipino people must not be tolerated. It is high time that we demand truth, accountability, good governance, justice and morality from our country's leaders.

The involvement of each and everyone of us will make a critical difference. We have the power of number. Let us creatively and boldly make use of it.

End Food "Rice" Crisis!,
NO to IMF-WB Structural Adjustment Program(SAP)!
NO to the WTO!
NO to corruption and bribery!
Stop Human rights violation!
Fight for Truth and Justice!
End Arroyo Government Now!
